Inspiring and Encouraging Indigenous Immigrant Students to Pursue their Academic Dreams

We are proud to announce the release of the Tequio Scholarship Fund, inspiring and encouraging indigenous immigrant youth to pursue their academic dreams.  The fund provides individual grants and ongoing support to Ventura County's youth who are of Mixtec or of indigenous Mexican roots from the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, as they pursue higher education. The term "Tequio" describes an indigenous person's desire and commitment to assist their community.  Grants are distributed annually to applicants selected by the Tequio Scholarship Committee.

The fund seeks highly motivated applicants attending or planning to attend college or university in fall, 2014. Students must be from Ventura County, but do not need to be enrolled in a Ventura County college or university.  Students must be of indigenous Mexican background, from Oaxaca or Guerrero, Mexico.  Applicants are not required to be FAFSA eligible.  Preference is given to students who participate in MICOP’s Tequio Youth Group.

To apply, students may download the application below.  The application is due at 5 pm, May 1, 2014. Recipients will be notified in the first week of July and will receive their award during MICOP’s annual Night in Oaxaca celebration.
